Imagine a floor that isn’t covered or coated, but is to achieve a dense, and brilliant, mirror-like finish. This is the art and science of true polished concrete. It’s a premium flooring solution for businesses that want a surface that is not only visually stunning but also incredibly durable and easy to maintain.
At Midwest Surface Coatings, we are one of the few expert teams in the Rochester area with the specialized equipment and technical skill to deliver a true polished concrete floor.
What is True Polished Concrete?
Unlike a coating, a polished concrete floor gets its beauty and strength from a process of refinement.
- Grinding & Honing
We use heavy grinders with finer diamond pads to smooth the concrete, remove imperfections, and hone the surface to the desired level of shine from a soft satin to a deep, high-gloss polished concrete finish.
- Chemical Densification
We apply a liquid chemical densifier. This, into the concrete, creates a reaction that hardens and densifies the surface from the inside out. The result is not a layer on top of your floor; the floor is the finish.
Polished Concrete VS Grind and Seal
As Rochester flooring experts, we believe in educating our clients to help them make the best choice.
- Grind and Seal
A Grind and Seal floor is an excellent, cost-effective system where the concrete is ground smooth and then a topical sealer is applied. The shine and protection come from this clear topcoat.
- Polished Concrete
Polished Concrete achieves its shine by closing the pores of the concrete itself until it becomes smooth and light-reflective. It is a more labor-intensive process to get a clear floor
Benefits of a Polished Concrete Floor
Businesses choose polished concrete when they need the ultimate combo of aesthetics and performance.
- Incredible Durability
The surface itself is hardened, and it is extremely resistant to abrasions from foot traffic and equipment. There is no coating to ever chip, peel, or wear away.
- Stunning Reflectivity
A polished floor dramatically increases ambient light, making your space brighter and more inviting.
- Easiest to Maintain
This is the low-maintenance concrete polish. With no wax to strip and reapply, cleaning involves simple dust mopping and occasional use of a walk-behind scrubber.
- A Healthy Surface
The densification process creates a dust-proof, polished surface that no longer sheds concrete dust.
Where to Use a Polished Concrete Coating?
Polished concrete excels in specific indoor environments.
01Commercial & Retail
Commercial polished concrete floors are for high-end retail stores, grocery stores, showrooms, and lobbies where a clean, upscale, and durable floor is essential.
02Industrial & Institutional
A grind and seal provides an authentic and durable surface that can handle heavy foot traffic.
03Where a Coating is Better
Because polished concrete is not a waterproof membrane, it’s not suited for areas with frequent moisture, chemical exposure, or outdoor spaces like Patios that must endure our Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles.
Our Polished Concrete Flooring Process
01Initial Grinding
We remove any existing coatings with heavy-grit metal-bond diamonds and expose to your desired level.
02Repair & Grouting
We fill any cracks or pinholes with a specialized grout to create a perfectly smooth surface.
03Chemical Densifier
We apply the liquid densifier and allow it to penetrate and harden the concrete.
04Multi-Stage Honing
We continue the grinding process with progressively finer grits of metal-bond diamonds.
05Multi-Stage Polishing
We switch to fine, resin-bond diamond pads to polish the floor, bringing out the natural gloss and shine.
06A Stain Guard
We apply a final, penetrating stain guard to provide added protection against spills and stains.
Looking for Color or a Different Finish?
A decorative Flake System or a vibrant Solid Color coating is an excellent alternative. These systems use materials like Polyurea and Polyaspartic to create a seamless, protective, and colorful surface.
